#WomanPower – Learning from International Women’s Day; Leslee Udwin’s BBC documentary – India’s Daughter; UN’s Official Theme

In an extremely hypocritical world, we live in, a single day in a year cannot undo the many prejudices that women struggle to cope with around the world! On one hand, there is massive progression on women’s rights and on the other, parts of the world continue to grapple with women’s right to equality and freedom! Case in point – When it comes to celebrating women’s day, nothing can be more discouraging to see one country propagating women’s right and the other restricting it by deliberating on conservative attitudes towards women! I believe it’s time to focus on women’s issues as a whole rather than focus on the bad in one country or one part of the world. Clearly, the issue of sexual violence against women spans countries and continents. BBC’s documentary ‘India’s Daughter’ addresses this very clear divide between progression Vs. the misogynistic mindsets more like the good Vs. evil! Well, I’m not a feminist and I don’t have any agenda in writing about International Women’s Day.. but as a son to a Mother who has taught me to be respectful and grounded, brother to two most adorable sisters and an uncle to a niece, friend and colleague to incredible […]

The UnRetouched trend; Gucci’s Reinvention; Succès de Scandale – Learning from Miley, Madonna & Iggy Azalea = Celebrating Inner beauty! Selena Gomez Vs. Nicole Kidman

The notion on beauty, objectifying beauty and its complexities are varied but now it is reaching an apocalyptic level of liberation becoming more vivid, true to the core and sight for sore eyes. Case in point – from Madonna‘s unretouched pictures for Interview magazine in November last year; Kate Moss‘s recent unretouched Vogue Italia spread shot by Peter Lindbergh; the leaked L’Oréal cosmetics campaign showing Beyoncé‘s uneven skin tone; Cindy Crawford‘s much debated stretch marks via Marie Claire Mexico.. to the very recent, Iggy Azalea accepting that being a woman and having cellulite is perfectly normal! Reese Witherspoon’s Wild, Julianne Moore’s role of Alice Howland and her gripping performance in Still Alice and especially the deglamourized performance from Jennifer Aniston in Cake all point to a clear emphasis on “real beauty”, “real-woman” beautiful from the inside! UnRetouched, most definitely is a trend now.  What is sad is that the reaction over it in social media from certain quarters which is quite disgusting – as if there is a sheer lack of moral consciousness out there! I totally respect freedom of speech howsoever opinionated (strong, succinct, relevant or otherwise) as some people can be subtly honest and bold about their introspection on what’s trending – however, today, […]

Internet Vs. The Business of Fashion (Weeks); Holographic Models in future; Conspicuous Consumption Vs. Conspicuous Frugality; Real Woman -Patricia Arquette at the Oscars; Elie Saab rocks!

Huff ‘n’ puff literally I have so much to write that it’s impossible to capture the essence of it in one subject line! OK, one at a time I have been asked by lot of my blog readers as to why there are so many frequent fashion weeks across the four major contributing fashion capitals of the world i.e. New York, London, Milan and Paris? Well, there is never a dull moment in fashion but the fashion weeks across four major fashion capitals is actually a biannual affair. Twice in an year (February for Autumn/Winter and September for Spring/Summer) fashion weeks are organized to help define trends for the coming season and they take place much in advance to enable buyers and retailers stock up just in time for the season. So when you think you have the world’s best wardrobe and all the latest trends..and you are done with sourcing and eventually gathering(buying) your priced sartorial possessions – you are made to believe that it may not be “the end of the shopping frenzy or updating your wardrobe” after all! C’est la vie! The most recent fashion week this month just concluded in New York NYFW AW15, followed by […]

Amsterdam – Beyond Heineken, Canals, Cannabis, Coffeeshops, Cycles + A tale of 3 Cities + The Bruce Jenner diaries + Androgynous future of fashion

I have been bitten but the travel bug in 2015!! Travel rules over fashion this year for me. There is a lot of fashion wisdom out there and following it can be a bit nerve wrecking! Sometimes keeping up with what’s really transitioning from the runways to the streets can be a daunting task. Also, I refuse to waste my time pondering over how I can display a thrilling demonstration of my fashion prowess amidst keen and informed readers of my blog and my extended social media diaspora – who seem already dazed and bewildered by the “too-much-information syndrome”! I just believe fashion is cyclic and is also socially determined (as suggested by the economist George Taylor).”What goes around…comes around” and that pretty much sums up my understanding of fashion. Besides the fact that I reside in truly one of the most fashion-conscious cities of the world! My love for London is a decade strong. London is home – a city where avant-garde laissez-faire carnival-isq fashion hedonism never stops. You can see abject simplicity to high-fashion complicity in every nook and corner of London ..no wonder, global fashion resides here.  Speaking of greatness, I must mention YOO – YOO is […]

Logo Affinity; London Collections: Men AW15 & The Golden Globe Awards; #JeSuisCharlie; Bye-bye Frida Giannini of Gucci, Welcome John Galliano of Maison Martin Margiela!

The real definition of Multitasking: I’m sipping on my favorite Caffè Nero (yes, with chocolate on top!) cappuccino and my mind is wandering like a pendulum..more like Ke$ha’s tik-tok but quietly humming Taylor Swift’s Blank Space (way cooler than Ke$ha’s tik-tok anyday) running on my current playlist. My mind wanders to the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show and all the parodies that this song ignited on the WWW(Bart Baker? Can’t seem to shake off that guy from my head!).. I am also trying to read a magazine but it doesn’t seem like much of a page turner. Then, suddenly it dawns on me that today, the London Collections: Men AW15 finally wraps up and I hurriedly Google to find the post-event reviews and all the analysis on collections. This post was almost finished in the late afternoon of Monday, 12th Jan’15! But, it only shows up on my blog on 13th Jan’15. Please don’t mind and carry on reading Frankly, reviews don’t matter as much I love to analyze the contrast when runway trends and divergent viewpoints of the designers’ clash on the runway and off it. Menswear is having a moment right now and this all makes one helluva grand show proclaiming Menswear […]

Are MEN shedding labels and traditional stereotypes? Gender-neutral fashion Plus, Bradley Cooper’s sexy leg-poser

The “nouveau sexist” (not, feminist) might be having a field day labeling a new breed of men as either dandy, effeminate or passing them as too inessential to even talk about; but seems like men in the modern world are no longer bothered about shedding traditional stereotypes! Men are taking giant strides in dropping labels(metrosexual etc.) – This turning point is already in existence and full force now and in the process creating a whole new identity! Perhaps the best explanation of this transition is adapted from Martina Navratilova’s quote: Labels are for filing. Labels are for clothing. Labels are not for people. Men are giving importance to appearance more than ever and some would like to believe that men are evolving fast to recession-proof themselves. Image and appearance have suddenly become the benchmarks for survival in the wake of post-economic downturn. It started years back – I call the “years of reckoning” phenomenon – when men made fashion statement of sorts accepting a very modernist take on classic (slim fit suits for example); gleefully accepting flamboyance of colors, fabrics -velvet/silk (as opposed to wearing traditional fabrics), seams to stitches, sleeves to collars and silhouettes showing a multifaceted dynamism. Almost […]

Workplace romance – Yea or Nay? Plus, The American Apparel decree

American Apparel’s recent ban on workplace romance might make a compelling argument whether the ban actually makes sense, lacks logicality or is simply despotic! Workplace romances are not uncommon and I am a testament to this fact since I have many friends and ex-colleagues who met their soulmates at work. There is no specific study and research that proves actual statistics of workplace romances as most of them get noticed but not reported. However, there is factual evidence available that workplace romance does flourish in most cases as people work in close proximity to each other, have plenty of time to know a co-worker better (both laterally and at a subordinate level), develop a genuine attraction and find a future mate/spouse. It’s all hunky dory when two consensual single adults at workplace find succor in each other’s arms and find love – true, long-term or temporary. The end result could be a sure shot positive dose of dealing with work related stress and in turn greater productivity and harmony all around. However, all hell breaks loose when a budding work romance turns out to be just a quick fling (“Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned” – applies to […]

Fashionating Twins – #SS15 revisited @ #TheRow and #DSQUARED2

I’m almost done and dusted with couple capers! Couples finally tying the knot and all the post-nupital-fun they seem to be having! Well, congrats is in order to couples who got hitched in 2014! A big year for the eternal-bachelor George Clooney who met his match in Amal Alamuddin (now, Amal Clooney)! Hopefully it’ll be happily ever after for you guys! All I am saying is that I can’t seem to deal with all the coupling-overdose in one big literal gulp! All the hoopla has sure led #kimye (Kim Kardashian & Kanye West) in the arms of the luxury French fashion house Balmain! Surely, one thing I learn here is that the more you are “out there” the more probability you will get to be “out here”!! Being constantly plastered across social media has immense benefits! But, the focal point of my post is the a pairing of a different kind. Here is officially my first post celebrating the oomph of real fashion rockstars and people I admire and people who fascinate me (wait, there are many, many more people I will be talking about, these 2 pairs on my list are just lucky to be the first ones). Picture: Popsugar, The […]

My Body = My Canvas

I am a firm believer of symbolism much like the ancient cultures had their own myths and totems and spiritual symbols had different connotations for them. I procrastinated of sorts on getting inked for many years and finally took the plunge last year! Not getting one or two, but ten in total within a span of two months! It’ll be difficult to say “I will stop at ten”! But, what really made me get them in the first place wasn’t because getting tattooed is a fad of sorts but because I strongly believe tattoos are a way of expressing one’s individuality and not about “just being fashionable”. Although, part of me (which is overtly flamboyant at times) figured that a tattoo (or a bunch of tattoos) will only have its perks as it creates a curiosity about the person. It infuriates me on how people with #tats are perceived and it’s a real bummer! I’m much over opinionated people and false first impressions! Some of the most intelligent people I know with possibly the highest emotional and intelligence quotient combined are #Inked !! I won’t deny that the needles to scare me! But, there is something addictive about the buzz […]
